dream verbs...

When working with someone’s dreams I will always ask about some moment in the dream, “What is that like?” ”What’s the feeling in that place?” And often times, as dreamers, we just don’t know. It can be hard to access our feelings.

It is hard to access our feelings because many of us have forgotten what it is like to truly be in our bodies. Many of us have the mistaken belief that our feelings don’t matter and so they fade into the background.
But our bodies remember. Like a precious friend, they hold our feelings for us until we are ready to feel them. And our dreams are always ready for us to feel and will often bring images of our feelings through the verbs, the actions we are doing in a dream.

In our dreams our bodies are trying to help us. Dream verbs may include…
running…
hiding…
organizing…
scrubbing..
falling…
diving…

The body can be helpful if we can’t quite get to the feeling.  By embodying the dream action the feeling in that moment starts to emerge, to reveal itself.  So spend some time with the verbs in your dreams.  Don’t focus right now on the story around the verb…just ‘be the verb.’

Imagine...or better yet...re-enact the action. How does it feel in your body to be running? Does it feel freeing, expansive or does it feel as though you’re running from something? What does it feel like to be scrubbing?  Does it feel like ‘I have to’...is there a tightness, perhaps some frustration, even anger in the movement?

The body’s wisdom knows what we’re feeling...oftentimes before our mind knows. And once we have the feeling we have the key to opening up our dream.

With love, Mary Jo
